Staying on site at Bobundara, an historic sheep property in the foothills of the snowy mountains is a treat on its own but when you’re there to soak up the beauty of the land and sky, responding in paint, its an experience to remember.
In this workshop I will share my process and approach to painting outdoors through demonstration and suggested exercises which will focus on observation, composition, colour and content, plus I’ll give you some practical ideas on how you might approach your work.
We will split our days with plein air and studio work where you will have the opportunity to develop larger or ‘slower’, more considered works from your plein air studies.
Whether you’re just starting out or are an experienced painter, this weekend is designed to be enriching and productive.
Painting a scene from within the scene itself is a wonderful experience for anyone who appreciates landscape. I work en plein air a lot because there is an immediacy and energy that cannot always be summoned in the studio. Aspects like the temperature and elements that are often ‘invisible’ can play a part in en plein air painting, adding life and energy to the finished work.
The shifting light, moving clouds, and changing elements sharpen your observation, refine your technical skills, and ignite creative breakthroughs.
For these reasons, I believe painting en plein air is one of the best exercises to loosen up and grow your skillset as a painter of any kind. We’ll endeavour to spend each morning working outdoors (weather permitting).

Our ‘studio’ (aka The Barn) at Bobundara. After a productive morning painting outdoors, here you can escape the sun and wind to work on larger, ‘slower’ pieces.
We’ll be turning the old lucerne shed into our ‘studio’ for this workshop so each afternoon, you can work on a larger or ‘slower’ piece at your own pace.
Combining studio time with outdoor painting brings an exciting freshness to your work. You’ll be more prolific than you’ve ever been over these 4 days!
Arrive Tuesday 1st April for 4 full days of painting Wednesday 2nd – Saturday 5th April 2025. Depart Sunday 6th April.

Workshop Overview
I’m a big believer in learning through doing, so this weekend will be all about that… using the work as the guide, expanding by expressing, loosening up, feeling your way to what works for you. You’ll have the time to get clearer about a way of painting a place that resonates with you, fits with your personality and creative strengths.
My goal is to facilitate your individual needs and goals, whatever your level of experience.
I’ll share some of my process each day and do some demos. In one-on-one time, we’ll focus on your individual goals and challenges, with guidance and processes specific for you.
Tuesday 1st April: Arrive and settle in, meet & greet drinks, welcome dinner.

This is a residential workshop, making the experience all the more immersive. There are a selection of single and twin share rooms in different buildings on the property, providing a range of options.
The rustic quarters contain our communal kitchen, dining and lounge at one end and 2 king bed rooms (both ensuited) at the other. Full length verandas run along the eastern and western sides of the building. These rooms can be set to twin share. Please contact us if you would like to do this and we will send a link to book.
A beautiful old stone barn, converted into delightful rooms – 1 x queen room and 1 x twin room with a shared bathroom. These rooms open to the east and catch the first rays of the sun.
Set away from the other buildings, the cottage is fully self-contained with a queen bed, kitchen and lounge / dining. Perfect for a single or couple seeking some solitude.
Named the Columnsseum for its new oversized columns, this charming little building has recently been converted into a light-filled, studio style queen room. It shares a bathroom closeby in the Steading.
I’m a full time painter, working mostly in the landscape genre. I’ve always felt an affinity with the landscape and I love the challenge of painting outdoors for the focus and connection it brings to my work as well as the clarity and calm it brings to my mind.
